Jean-Eric Vergne has enjoyed a swift rise through the single-seater ranks and spent three seasons competing in Formula 1. The Frenchman started his career very early as he drove at his father’s kart track in Cormeilles from the age of four. Vergne enjoyed plenty of success in karting – he was the French junior champion in 2001, second in the European ICA championship in 2005 and seventh in the World Karting Championship the following season. In 2007, Vergne graduated to racing cars and clinched the French Formula Renault Campus title at the first attempt with six victories. He won the French Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in 2008 and took four wins on his way to second in the European Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup the following season. Vergne won the British Formula 3 championship in 2010, becoming the first Frenchman to do so. He also made his debut in Formula Renault 3.5 where he took three podiums and one victory alongside his F3 campaign. At the end of the season he made his Formula 1 test debut with his future team Toro Rosso. In 2011, he mounted a full-scale assault on the Formula Renault 3.5 championship and ended the year as runner-up after five wins. In 2012, Vergne made his Formula 1 race debut for Toro Rosso scoring 16 points on his way to 17th in the final standings. He improved to 15th in the championship in 2013 despite scoring 13 points. In his final Formula 1 season with Toro Rosso, Vergne scored 22 points – which included an equal career high finish of sixth place at the Singapore Grand Prix - and finished 13th in the drivers’ championship.
